The usual suspects (and the hidden ones)
- Poverty & economic insecurity: Not just “no money,” but unstable jobs, rising costs, predatory lending, and lack of childcare or transport.
- Violence at home and in the community: Safety planning, shelters, and trauma-informed care save lives—but prevention, respectful relationships, and accountability are the long game.
- Health gaps: From mental health support to maternal care, access is uneven, stigma is high, and waitlists are long.
- Education inequality: Schools serving low-income areas often have fewer resources, larger class sizes, and outdated materials.
- Digital harm: Stalking, doxxing, deepfakes, and scams—tech can empower, sure, but it can also endanger.

Works well
- Prevention plus response: Teach consent, respect, and conflict resolution and keep hotlines, shelters, and counseling strong.
- Cash and housing supports: Direct aid, rent assistance, and stable shelter reduce crisis dramatically.
- Culturally responsive care: Services that reflect language, identity, and lived experience increase trust and follow-through.
- Community partnerships: Schools, clinics, NGOs, faith groups, and businesses share the load—and the wins.
- Good data with humility: Track outcomes, learn quickly, and adapt. Numbers matter; people matter more.
Doesn’t help much
- One-off charity without change: A meal today is mercy; a living wage is justice. We need both.
- Victim-blaming: Survivors aren’t responsible for harm done to them. Period.
- Performative campaigns: Awareness is step one. Action pays the bills, shifts norms, and saves lives.
The role of storytelling (and why it’s tricky)
Stories open hearts; policies open doors. We need both. Still, survivor stories belong to survivors. Sharing must be informed, consented, and safe—no pressure, no sensationalism. Respect first, clicks never.
